How does it work?
In many schools in Africa – including the project area in Kenya – water has to be boiled to ensure a safe supply for students and teachers. This is often done using coal, gas, briquettes, diesel generators or wood. As a result, large amounts of CO2 are emitted. The project makes this old technology redundant by providing schools with reliable water treatment technologies that work without electricity or heating processes. Installation, maintenance and repair services for schools are also offered. The project activities are financed by the sale of emission reduction certificates. These are achieved because water no longer needs to be boiled at great expense, thus saving firewood. Overall, the programme has already reached over 40,000 schools and more than 16 million students. By the end of 2025, over 100,000 schools are expected to benefit directly from the programme.
