We receive many questions about what a proper proposal should look like. We are convinced that projects are very different and should therefore not be squeezed into a standardised format. That's why we set relatively few guidelines, as you will notice while applying in our online portal. Our aim is to keep the effort within reasonable limits, as the funding amount is limited and we do not want to cause unnecessary work.
On this page you will find an online tutorial that explains the background to the RISK Award, the selection process and how to apply. You can also download the presentation used there. We have also included a FAQ section below. Together with the general application guidelines, we hope that all questions can be covered. If you are still unclear about specific questions, please contact us directly by email.

    FAQs

What do you understand under "youth" - is there any age range?

We refer to the UN definition, up to 25 years.

Is the focus of the RISK Award purely on education not on infrastructure?

Here we are flexible. It depends on the project, we do not exclude fields of activities which serve DRR.

Do you have a list for eligible countries?

All countries are eligible besides High-Income Countries based on the World Bank Classification

How many organisations will receive the funding?

Unfortunately, our resources are limited to 100,000 €. Hence, only one or two organisations (if their project budget is around 50,000 €) can receive the project funding.

How many applications do you receive?

That varies and very much depends on the annual topic. Last year it was over 200 applications.

May I upload more than one proposal?

Yes, an organisation can upload two or more proposals. In that case, please make sure to create two or more accounts. Technically we can only handle one application per account.

May organisations be subcontracted after having won the RISK Award?

Yes, in principle we are open for sub-contracting. Details will be clarified in a mutual process between Munich Re Foundation and the winning organisation.

    When shall the project start?

The official announcement of the winning project will take place in June 2025. Hence, the funding phase of the RISK Award cannot start before July 2025 (or later).

    What are overhead costs?

According to our definition, overhead costs are rather generic costs, such as admin costs, which are not linked to the funded project. Especially larger organisations deduct these overheads from all project donations in order to finance their general administrative costs that are not incurred through specific project work, such as central HR positions, security staff, accounting and much more. All costs, including admin costs, which are directly related to the proposed project should not be put under overhead. The ceiling for acceptable overhead is 15% of the funding sum.

Is it mandatory for the organisation to make in-kind contribution or provide further external donors?

No, the project can be fully funded and financed by the RISK Award, as long as it stays within the budgetary limit of 100,000 €.

Apply now for the 2025 RISK Award, endowed with a project funding of up to €100,000! The application phase runs from 1 July to 13 October 2024 (20:00 CET).
